Label intervals assume average water. Here is how to build a schedule around the water you actually have.
Manufacturer intervals are written for average water quality and average household use. A high sediment load or a full house will reach capacity sooner than the box suggests.
Sediment pre-filters are the easiest stage to judge, because you can pull the housing and look. Visible loading or a pressure drop across the filter means it is finished regardless of the date.
Carbon is harder, because it fails invisibly. Once capacity is exhausted, taste and odor pass straight through with no outward sign, so carbon is tracked by time rather than appearance.
Membranes should be judged by measurement. Take a reading at the treated tap and compare it against the baseline recorded at installation; a meaningful drop in rejection is the signal to replace.
